Bert Stedman
Southeast Alaska District A, Republican

Senator Bert Stedman, a fourth-generation Alaskan raised in Petersburg and Sitka, is known for his expertise on energy, taxation, public finance, and state budgeting issues. Before joining the Alaska State Legislature, he ran a successful investment services firm for thirty years and spent over a decade serving in Sitka’s local government. He served as Co-Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee from 2007 – 2012. During the initial phase of his tenure as Co-Chair, substantial financial deposits, amounting to billions of dollars, were directed into state savings accounts, including the Constitutional Budget Reserve (CBR) and the Statutory Budget Reserve (SBR). Protecting the Permanent Fund for future generations of Alaskans to share the state’s oil wealth is one of his main priorities. In 2019, Senator Stedman was again selected by his legislative colleagues to serve as Co-Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, a role he continues to hold. He also serves as a member of the Legislative Budget & Audit Committee, Legislative Council, and the Senate Transportation Committee.

In addition to his work in the Alaska Legislature, Senator Stedman is an active member of The Energy Council, a U.S.-Canada organization of energy-producing states and provinces that addresses oil and gas policy. He has been elected Chairman of The Energy Council twice, first in 2012 and again in 2023, and currently serves as a member of its Executive Committee. Senator Stedman has also been a member of the National Petroleum Council, a federal advisory committee that provides recommendations to the Secretary of Energy on oil and gas matters, since 2014.

Senator Stedman’s strong financial background has served the state well and will continue to do so in the future.
